More About Our Herd
Janzen Family Farms produces 100% grass-fed beef from cattle that have lived their entire life cycle on wide-open pastures. We acquired our first all-grass adapted cattle in 2007 from Grassroots Cattle Co. of Hutchinson, Kansas, owned and operated by Torrey and Jim Ball. These animals are an old line Angus, both black and red, bred from stock that was adapted to the cold winters and dry conditions of the High Plains of eastern Colorado and Montana, and birthing on their own. They are bred to finish in 21 to 26 months on grass-only diets, resulting in healthy, flavorful meat. Our Janzen Family Farms grass-fed animals are raised to meet or exceed criteria established in late 2007 by the U.S. Department of Agriculture for the “grass (forage) fed marketing claim standard.” This standard states that “grass and/or forage shall be the feed source consumed for the lifetime of the ruminant animals, with the exception of milk consumed prior to weaning. The diet shall be derived solely from forage and animals cannot be fed grain or grain by-products and must have continuous access to pasture during the growing season.”
